Multan is a city in Pakistan, in Punjab. Located on the banks of the Chenab River, Multan is the 7th largest city in Pakistan and is Southern Punjab’s main cultural and economic centre. The history of Multan extends far into the Antiquity.
Multan is one of the oldest towns on the Asian subcontinent. It is situated in the Indus River Valley and on the left bank of the Chenab River, one of Indus ‘ tributaries. It came into being on Multan’s name after Great Flood: one of Sino bin Canaan’s sons, Noah’s grandson. According to Hindu legends, at the time of the Mahabharata war, it was the capital of Trigarta Kingdom, ruled by the Katoch Dynasty. The current name derives from the Sanskrit name Mulasthana, named after a temple of the sun.
